SEO for Scaffolders

One engineer-designed scaffold is £8,000. That’s three years of marketing from a single job.

Low volume, extraordinary value — the best ratio in the trades

A chimney scaffold is £600. Domestic tube and fitting, £850. Commercial system scaffolding, £1,500. An internal birdcage, £4,000. An engineer-designed complex scaffold, £8,000.

Now hold that against what marketing costs. Flat Out is £199 a month — £2,388 a year. One designed scaffold covers it more than three times over. One commercial system job covers eight months.

That ratio is better than almost any trade we work with, and it changes how you should think about search entirely. You are not trying to generate a flood of enquiries. You are trying to catch a handful a year, because a handful is transformational.

That’s the opportunity most scaffolders miss. They look at the search volume, decide it’s small, and do nothing — while their competitors do nothing either. Which means the searches that do exist are cheap to win and almost uncontested.

Three separate things are worth catching:

Domestic search, which is real and steady. Chimney scaffolds, loft conversion access, homeowners whose roofer has told them they need scaffolding. Low competition, £600 to £850 a time, and it fills the weeks between contract work.

Local commercial terms. Low volume, occasionally enormous. One enquiry can be worth more than a quarter of domestic work.

The verification search. When a site manager gets your name from a roofer, the first thing they do is look you up. When a contractor builds a tender list, someone checks you’re real and insured. Losing that moment loses you a relationship worth £36,000 over four years — and that’s the most expensive search failure in your trade.

What actually matters for you

Your name has to be findable. “[Your company] scaffolding” should return your site, your profile, your reviews and nothing embarrassing. That sounds trivial. A surprising number of scaffolders fail it.

The domestic searches are winnable. Chimney scaffolds, domestic tube and fitting, loft conversion scaffolds. Low competition, decent volume, and they fill gaps between commercial work.

Local commercial terms are worth a page each. “Scaffolding hire [town]”, “commercial scaffolding [county]”. Small volume, high value — one enquiry can be worth £8,000.

Your Google Business Profile does real work. Builders check it. Reviews from other trades carry enormous weight, because a recommendation from a roofer means more than one from a homeowner.

Content that helps a buyer decide. “How much does scaffolding cost for a two-storey house”, “how long can scaffolding stay up”, “do I need a scaffold licence”. Genuine questions from people about to hire, and almost nobody has answered them properly.

What we’d actually do

Fix findability first — profile, reviews, name searches, consistent details everywhere. Cheap and quick.

Then the domestic pages, because that’s where the actual search volume is and it fills your quiet weeks.

Then a page per area you genuinely cover, aimed at trade buyers, with lead times and insurance visible.

Then the buyer questions — cost, duration, licensing, what happens if the job overruns. These rank easily because nobody’s written them well, and they’re exactly what a first-time buyer needs.

Then, more importantly than any of it, we’d make sure your capability pack is downloadable and your details are consistent across every directory and profile, because your real acquisition channel is being on a list rather than being in a search result.

Every part of that is cheap relative to what one job returns — which is the whole argument for doing it properly rather than doing it never.

What to expect, and when

This is a shorter programme than any other trade on our list, and the expectations should match.

Month one. Findability sorted — profile, consistent details across directories, name searches returning the right things, capability pack downloadable. Most of the value lands here and it lands quickly.

Month one to three. Domestic pages start ranking. Chimney scaffolds and domestic tube-and-fitting work is low competition, so this tends to move faster than it would in a busy trade.

Month three onwards. Local commercial terms start to show. Very low volume — you might get one or two enquiries a quarter from them. But at £8,000 for a designed scaffold, one enquiry justifies the whole year.

Ongoing. Trade reviews accumulate, which is the thing that actually affects whether a builder who’s been given your name decides to ring.

Judge it on jobs won, not on traffic. A scaffolder’s search report will always look modest next to a plumber’s. It doesn’t matter. Three domestic scaffolds and one commercial enquiry in a quarter is £10,000 of work against a few hundred pounds of marketing, and that’s a return most trades would take gladly.

The compounding matters too. Every builder relationship that starts with a search — or survives a check because your site looked right — is worth £36,000 over four years. You are not buying enquiries. You are buying the relationships they turn into.

The mistakes we see most on scaffolders’ SEO

Doing nothing because the volume looks small. The commonest mistake in the trade, and the reason those searches stay cheap. Small volume at £8,000 a job is a very good market to be in.

Ignoring the domestic searches that do exist. Chimney scaffolds are steady, winnable work and most scaffolders don’t bother.

No reviews from trade customers. A review from a roofer is worth ten from homeowners, and nobody asks for them.

Inconsistent details across directories. Different phone numbers and addresses in different places undermines both ranking and credibility.

No answers to buyer questions. Cost, duration, licensing — asked constantly, answered almost nowhere.

Treating the website as a shop window. It’s a credibility check. Build it for the person verifying you, not for browsing.

What’s a customer worth?

Average scaffold £1,500 · scaffolds per builder per year 6 · relationship 4 years

£36,000 per builder relationship. You don’t need traffic. You need two more builders.

Every enquiry lands in Gaffer

Enquiries land with the site address and job type. Quote from a template. Inspections schedule on a cycle. Hire periods track against the job so extensions don’t get missed at invoicing, which is where scaffolders quietly lose money.

Questions scaffolders ask

Is it worth it at our search volumes?

One designed scaffold pays for three years. One commercial system job pays for eight months. You don’t need volume when the jobs are worth this much — you need to catch the few that exist, and almost nobody in your trade is trying.

Is domestic worth chasing?

For search, yes — it’s the only real volume you have and it fills gaps.

How do we get trade reviews?

Ask, straight after a job goes well. Most builders will, and nobody ever asks them.

What about tenders?

That’s where the downloadable capability pack earns its keep. It gets forwarded to people you’ll never meet.
