Nobody finds a scaffolder on a map. They check one.

Your work comes from builders, roofers and contractors, and it comes through relationships and recommendations. A site manager doesn’t open a map and pick the nearest scaffolder — they ring the one they used last time, or the one a roofer mentioned.

But they do look you up. Before the first call, before adding you to a tender list, before handing you a £8,000 designed scaffold. And what they find is your profile.

That makes local visibility genuinely worth getting right, for a completely different reason to every other trade on this list. It’s not bringing you enquiries. It’s making sure the enquiry you’d have got anyway doesn’t evaporate at the checking stage.

There’s one exception. Domestic scaffolding does get searched — chimney scaffolds, loft conversion scaffolds, tube and fitting for a homeowner’s roof job. That’s real, low-competition search volume at £600 to £850 a time, and it fills quiet weeks. Most scaffolders ignore it.

What actually matters for you

Reviews from other trades. A review from a roofer or a builder is worth ten from homeowners, because your buyer is a roofer or a builder. Nobody in your trade ever asks for these.

Insurance and accreditation visible. CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline, CSCS — on the profile, not just the site. It’s what the checker is checking.

Accurate, complete, professional-looking information. A half-empty profile undermines a recommendation.

Photos of real scaffolds. Commercial, domestic, designed. It shows range and capability.

Correct categories for the domestic searches you can actually win.

Consistency across every directory, because inconsistent details make a procurement person nervous.

What we’d actually do

Set the profile up properly and completely — categories, services split between commercial and domestic, insurance and accreditation detail, real photos.

Then a deliberate campaign to collect trade reviews. Ask builders and roofers straight after a job goes well. Almost all will, and almost none have ever been asked. Twenty reviews from named local trades is a genuinely powerful asset and no competitor will have it.

Then the domestic side — listed properly so you appear for chimney and small-job searches that fill gaps.

Then consistency everywhere, and the capability pack downloadable from wherever someone lands.

And then we’d stop, because that’s the extent of what local visibility can usefully do for a scaffolder. The rest of your budget belongs in credibility and relationships.

What good looks like for a scaffolder

Trade reviews: twenty, named, from local builders and roofers. That’s the target, and it’s the one that matters. Not a rate — a stock. Twenty reviews from identifiable local trades is a genuinely powerful asset, no competitor will have it, and it’s achievable within a year simply by asking after each job that goes well.

Insurance figures and accreditations visible on the profile. CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline, CSCS coverage, public liability amount. This is precisely what the person checking you is checking.

Photos: a mix showing range. Commercial system, domestic tube and fitting, birdcage, designed. Six to ten good images demonstrating you can handle more than a chimney.

Domestic services listed properly, so you appear for the chimney and small-job searches that fill quiet weeks.

Details identical everywhere. Different phone numbers across directories makes a procurement person nervous, and nervous is the opposite of what you want.

Position: strong locally for the domestic searches, which fill quiet weeks at £600 to £850 a scaffold. That alone will usually cover the cost several times over.

The measure that really matters is whether new builders ring you. One or two new trade relationships a year is the target — because at £36,000 per relationship over four years, two new builders is a transformed business against £2,388 of annual marketing.

That’s a fifteen-to-one return on the relationships alone, before a single domestic chimney scaffold. Very few investments in your business look like that.

The mistakes we see most

No trade reviews. The most valuable thing available to you and nobody asks.

Doing nothing because the volume looks small. At £8,000 a designed scaffold you don’t need volume — and the searches stay cheap precisely because your competitors think this way.

No insurance detail on the profile. It’s exactly what the person checking wants.

Domestic not listed. The only real search volume you have, routinely ignored.

Photos of one scaffold from 2021. Shows nothing about range.

Different details in different places. Undermines the trust the profile exists to build.

Questions scaffolders ask

Will this bring us work?

Domestic scaffolds directly, and it protects the trade relationships that are worth £36,000 each. One new builder covers fifteen years of the cost.

How do I ask a builder for a review?

Right after the scaffold comes down on a job that went well. Most say yes. Nobody asks.

Is domestic worth listing?

Yes — it’s your only real search volume and it fills gaps between commercial jobs.

Should we pay monthly for this?

At £2,388 a year against £8,000 a designed scaffold and £36,000 a builder relationship, it’s one of the better-value lines in your business. The review collection alone needs running continuously to build.

Will builders actually leave reviews?

More readily than homeowners, in our experience — they understand the trade and they know it costs them nothing. The reason nobody has them is that nobody asks, not that builders refuse.

What if a contractor asks for our pre-qualification pack?

It should already be downloadable, from the profile and the site. Making someone email to request it is where a lot of scaffolders quietly drop out of the running.
