CSCS cards are required on the vast majority of UK construction sites to prove the holder has the required training and qualifications. Virtually all clients, main contractors, and housing developers require workers to hold a valid CSCS card before site access is granted.

What you need to get it
3 requirements, and what counts as evidence for each.
Relevant NVQ or Apprenticeship
Hold an NVQ or SVQ in your trade (e.g. NVQ Level 2/3 in Bricklaying, Plastering, Carpentry, etc.), or a completed Apprenticeship. The qualification determines which card colour you can apply for.
Evidence: NVQ, SVQ, or Apprenticeship completion certificate.
CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test
Pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test at an approved test centre. The test covers construction H&S knowledge and must be passed within the last 2 years.
Evidence: CITB test pass certificate (valid within 2 years).
CSCS Card Application
Apply online at cscs.uk.com, uploading your qualification and test pass certificate. Pay the £36 application fee.
Evidence: Completed online application and payment.
What you have to keep doing
Getting it is the easy part. Keeping it means:
5-Year Renewal
Cards must be renewed every 5 years. You will need to pass the CITB test again and demonstrate continued competence.
Is it worth it?
At £36, the question isn’t the fee — it’s whether it wins you work. For builders it usually does, because it’s the first thing a cautious customer or a commercial buyer checks. Most trades hold accreditations and then hide the logos in the footer. If you’ve paid for it, it belongs where customers actually look.
Tracking it
Accreditations lapse quietly. The renewal date lands in a busy month, nobody spots it, and you find out when a customer asks for the certificate. Gaffer keeps your accreditations, evidence and renewal dates in one place and reminds you before they expire.
