What NICEIC is

NICEIC, run by Certsure, is the UK’s best-known electrical safety certification body. Approved Contractor status allows self-certification of electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations, and it is required or preferred by most commercial clients and by many insurers.

The fee runs around £400 a year, typically £250 to £800 depending on how many operatives you have, renewing annually.

Read the requirement list below and a pattern emerges immediately. Almost nothing in it assesses whether you can install. It assesses whether you can test, record and produce evidence — which is the actual subject of the scheme and the reason competent electricians sometimes fail it.

What you need

  • Electrical qualifications.

    A current 18th Edition BS 7671 Wiring Regulations qualification, plus AM2 assessment or equivalent NVQ Level 3. If you qualified under an earlier edition you need the 18th Edition update. Evidence: certificates.

  • Calibrated test equipment.

    Not merely owned — recently calibrated. A multifunction installation tester, a proving unit, a loop tester and an RCD tester. Evidence: the equipment and its calibration records.

  • Insurance.

    Minimum £2m public liability, plus employer’s liability if you have staff. Evidence: the schedule.

  • A permanent business address.

    Not a PO Box. NICEIC sends correspondence there and may visit. Evidence: the address itself.

  • An initial technical assessment.

    An assessor inspects completed installation work and checks your knowledge and your documentation practices. Evidence: recent work available to inspect.

What you have to keep doing

  • An annual technical inspection

    Of completed work, and an accessible archive of test records.

  • Self-certify Part P work

    Through the Certsure portal within 30 days.

  • Continuing professional development

    Keeping current with BS 7671, including re-assessment when a new edition lands.

  • Random spot-checks.

    NICEIC may audit completed work unannounced.

Calibration is the quiet failure

Of everything on that list, calibration is what catches people, and it catches them at the worst moment.

Test equipment drifts. A multifunction tester that has not been calibrated within its interval produces readings that are, formally, worthless — not because they are necessarily wrong, but because nothing establishes that they are right. An assessment finding certificates generated from uncalibrated equipment has found a whole body of work that cannot be relied upon, which is a much bigger problem than a single bad reading.

The practical failure is mundane. Calibration lapses because it means being without your tester for a period, which is inconvenient in a way that always makes next month look better than this month. Then the assessment date arrives.

Two things fix it permanently. Treat calibration as a diarised annual event with a date, in the same way as an MOT, rather than as something triggered by noticing. And if being without the tester is the real obstacle — which it usually is — factor a loan or second unit into the cost of the scheme, because the alternative is an assessment failure that costs considerably more than the hire.

The archive is the asset, and it outlives the job

“Maintain an accessible archive of test records” reads like filing. It is closer to the most valuable thing the scheme forces you to build.

Every installation and periodic inspection produces certificates and schedules of test results. Those documents are the evidence that the work was done properly, and they are asked for at unpredictable moments years later: when a property is sold, when an insurer investigates a fire, when a landlord needs an EICR history, when a client disputes work, and when an assessor turns up.

An electrician who can retrieve a five-year-old certificate in a minute is in a different position from one who thinks it might be on a previous phone. The first is protected. The second is relying on nobody ever asking.

There is a commercial edge to it too. Landlords and managing agents are required to hold electrical condition reports and are frequently disorganised about it. An electrician who can produce the history of a portfolio on request becomes very difficult to replace — not because the wiring is better, but because the records are, and switching contractor means losing them.

The mistakes we see most

  • Letting calibration lapse.

    Uncalibrated readings invalidate the certificates generated from them.

  • Certificates in a phone gallery.

    The archive has to be accessible, and it is asked for years later.

  • A PO Box address.

    Explicitly not accepted.

  • Assuming the assessment is about installation quality.

    It is largely about testing and documentation, which is why the fix for a failure is usually paperwork rather than practice.

The archive is also a recurring revenue list

One more reason the records matter, and it is the one with money attached.

Rented homes in England require an Electrical Installation Condition Report, renewed on a five-year cycle, and landlords must supply it to tenants and to the local authority on request. That is a legally mandated, recurring, dated piece of work attached to every rented property you have ever inspected.

An electrician holding a proper archive is holding a list of properties with known expiry dates. Approaching those landlords a couple of months before the report lapses is not cold outreach — it is reminding somebody of a legal obligation you are already the incumbent on, with the previous report in hand to prove it.

Almost nobody does this, and the reason is structural rather than commercial. The certificates exist as PDFs in an email account or a folder named by date, so producing a list of “EICRs expiring in the next quarter” is an afternoon of archaeology nobody has an afternoon for.

Held as records against properties with dates on them, the same list is a query. That turns the compliance burden the scheme imposes into the most reliable repeat work available in domestic electrical contracting — and it compounds, because every new inspection adds a property to the cycle.

The same logic applies to commercial periodic inspection, on shorter cycles and larger values.
